AISC certified steel erector: the Chapter 5 program and its endorsements
Erector certification is its own scope inside AISC 207-25. You carry Chapter 1 like every other certified company, then Chapter 5 layers on the requirements written for field work — erection plans, field tools and equipment, and coating clauses that replace the shop versions. Endorsements for seismic erection, metal deck installation, and bridge erection sit on top. This page explains what each one adds and what evidence an auditor samples.

What the erector program covers
The certified erector program audits the quality management system a company uses to put steel up in the field. Chapter 1 supplies the general requirements — quality policy and management review, document and record control, purchasing, material identification, process controls, inspection, calibration, nonconformances, corrective action, training, and internal audit. Chapter 5 then modifies and extends that base for erection: it requires control of the tools and equipment used to do the work (§5.5.5.3), an erection plan on every project (§5.12.6), and its own surface preparation and coating application clauses (§5.12.3, §5.12.4) in place of the shop-oriented Chapter 1 versions. Detailing requirements, by contrast, do not apply to erectors at all.

Erector (base program) (Chapter 1 + Chapter 5)
The core certified erector scope: everything in Chapter 1 that applies to every certified company, plus the Chapter 5 supplements written for erection work — control of erection tools and equipment (§5.5.5.3), an erection plan on every project (§5.12.6), and erector-specific coating surface preparation and application clauses (§5.12.3, §5.12.4) that stand in for the shop versions. Detailing requirements do not apply to erectors.
Seismic erection endorsement (§5.3.1)
For erecting seismic force-resisting systems, where demand-critical welds and protected zones carry additional referenced-standard obligations. It adds the seismic reference set on top of the base erector scope rather than replacing any of it.
Metal deck installation endorsement (§5.3.2)
For companies whose scope includes installing metal deck. It requires demonstrated ability to work to the applicable SDI quality-assurance standard and AWS D1.3, and the erection plan has to carry the deck installation instructions.
Bridge erection endorsement (§5.3.3)
For erecting bridges, which brings the bridge-specific referenced standards and owner requirements into the erector's system. Commonly held alongside the seismic or deck endorsements depending on the work mix.

A full-scope erector holding seismic, metal deck, and bridge erection carries 42 applicable requirements. The endorsements stack cleanly, which is why the incremental documentation burden is smaller than most companies expect.
What an auditor asks an erector to produce
- An erection plan for every project, not just the complicated ones (§5.12.6).
- Welder and bolting personnel qualifications kept current, with continuity maintained by logged field work.
- Calibration records for the measuring and testing equipment used in the field, inside their intervals (§1.14).
- Bolting installation and inspection records that match the specified pretension method.
- Nonconformance reports with dispositions, and corrective actions with verified effectiveness (§1.15, §1.16).
- An internal audit covering every section of the QMS within twelve months (§1.19).
- An annual management review addressing all nine mandated inputs (§1.5.3).
Where erectors usually lose findings
- Field records live in trucks, phones, and superintendents' notebooks, so nothing can be produced on request during the audit.
- The quality manual was written from a fabricator template and never swapped Chapter 1's shop coating clauses for the erector versions in §5.12.
- An endorsement is held on paper but the referenced standards behind it are not addressed anywhere in the documented system.
- Welder continuity lapses because field welds were never logged, even though the welding continued.
- Erection plans are produced for large jobs only, leaving gaps the auditor samples straight into.
Erection findings are rarely about workmanship. They are about evidence that was created in the field and then never made retrievable.
